Mophato oa Morija Choral Competition

The first weekend of January always marks the occasion of the annual Youth Choir Competition of the Lesotho Evangelical Church in Southern Africa (LECSA).  This highly competitive and popular event has been taking place since 1977 and is held in Morija at the Mophato oa Morija Youth Conference Centre.

The competition is open to all LECSA Youth Choirs with an age limit of 35.   This year there were 13 choirs competing in the Junior Division, 11 in the Senior B Division and 6 in the top-most Senior A Division.   Pre-assigned music for the event included hymns from the LECSA hymnbook as well as African and Western compositions.  For the first time in the event’s history, orchestral accompaniment was provided for some segments while others were sung a cappella.

The three adjudicators for the event were Mr. Thabo Makhebesela, Mrs. Manzikazi Scott and Mr. Tsietsi Mofokeng, all of whom are music professionals from South Africa.

In commenting on this year’s event, the Youth Organizer of the Mophato oa Morija, Mr. Teboho Mabeya, said, “The aim of the competition is to improve the quality of the music in our church services and to correctly sing the hymns as composed. We have successfully achieved that goal and the competition has grown beyond measure, hence it is now regarded as a national event. Growth on its own comes with a price because we’re now faced with challenges like expansion of the Main Hall, sustaining orchestral accompaniment (transportation, lodging and their payment as they are from South Africa). At this point in time we do not know how we’re going to overcome these challenges but with Christ who strengthens us we will be able to make it. Ka Maaaaatlaaaaaaa (with Power)”.

Final results for the 2014 event were:

Position Senior A Senior B Junior
1st Maseru LECSA Masianokeng LECSA Qacha’s Nek LECSA
2nd Qoaling LECSA Bothe-Bothe LECSA Boribeng LECSA
3rd Mankoaneng LECSA Thuathe LECSA Teya-Teyaneng LECSA
